On July 4th, the United States celebrates its day of patriotic pride, the anniversary of the proclamation of the United States as an independent country, on July 4th, 1776.
Although it is a national holiday, most shops and department stores are open and some even offer discounts for such a notable day. The most popular attractions also maintain their usual schedule, but to take advantage of the day like a real New Yorker, there are several options on offer but the difficulty will be which ones to choose!
Spend the day at the beach. Coney Island, located on the southern tip of Brooklyn, has everything you need for a summer bank holiday - the beach, a great atmosphere, an amusement park and New York's most voracious contest - eating hot dogs. It is held at Nathan, a restaurant that has been selling hot dogs on Coney Island since 1916 and has become such a tradition that it is even shown on television, and consists of eating the most hot dogs in just 10 minutes.The current record is 73 in the men's section and 37 in the women's section. If you are up for it, go ahead!
Picnic in Central Park. Another new Yorker's choice. All we need is a towel and food and drinks to enjoy a traditional picnic in New York at Sheep Meadow, the main green zone of Central Park. There'll be plenty of people around making for a lively atmosphere.
Family parties. There are several in New York and one of the most popular is at Roosevelt Island, with activities for young and old, inflatable castles, food stalls and live music. Another well-known one is held at Pier 15, on South Street Seaport where there are games and entertainment for all ages, several scheduled DJs and a buffet supper.
Fireworks Display. The unmissable crowning glory of Independence Day. It's organised by Macy's and is held at the East River. We have to take into account that more than 3 million people, both citizens and tourists want to see and enjoy it, so we have to be forward-looking and get to the place from where we want to see it early. We can liven up the wait with a picnic. The best place to see it from is the Brooklyn Bridge, but it's usually crowded with people. Other prime locations for the fireworks display are Domino Park in Williamsburg, South Street Seaport and Roosevelt Island. The diplay usually starts between 9 and 9.30pm and lasts for about half an hour.

Since 1986, one of New York City's biggest performing arts festivals has been held and is one of the most anticipated too as most performances are free. These shows are spread over 16 Big Apple parks and one of the most renowned venues is the Rumsey Playfield in Central Park.
Concerts, dance, theatre, from established artists to emerging talents, the festival spans a wide spectrum of styles from classical to electronic music.
It runs from late May to October and at all the events there are food and drinks stalls to keep you going while you enjoy the show.
One of the most deep-seated and best-loved stagings of the summer in New York City. Since 1962, Shakespeare in the Park has paid homage to the most universal playwright of all time, William Shakespeare.
The stage where all the performances are held is that of the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park and the likes of Denzel Washington have performed here. It is an open-air amphitheatre, built in 1961 and with a backdrop worthy of a Midsummer Night's Dream: Belvedere Castle and Turtle Pond.
During the month of July, many of New York's parks, gardens and some roof terraces are transformed into cinemas. The programming is weekly, so every day of the week the showings are in a different neighbourhood and cinema. Central Park Film Festival, Intrepid Museum's Summer Movie Series, Movies with a View, Brooklyn Film Festival, Rooftop Films, Roosevelt Island Outdoor Summer Movie Series, Films on the green, MOCA Cinema at Columbus Park - all of these are just a few of the outdoor film festivals. New York provides the movie and you provide the popcorn.
Bryant Park is the setting for Broadway in the Park, another of the most anticipated festivals in New York City in July. Here you can enjoy short exerpts of the best Broadway musicals, 3 or 4 different numbers of different musicals. They take place every Thursday in July and August from 12.30pm to 1.30pm and if you don't get there in time to get a seat you can relax on the grass to enjoy the show. If you take a midday snack with you it will make for a perfect lunch hour.
The Lincoln Center is located very close to Central Park and consists of several buildings that house different artistic and cultural organisations and institutions. Every year it stages the most important performances of opera and ballet. Their most celebrated performances are those that take place between the end of July and the beginning of August, at the Out of Doors festival, where we can enjoy various performances of classical and contemporary dance, concerts and family shows for free.
Every year, the New York City Poetry Festival is held in the last weekend of July. This festival welcomes all organisations and diverse groups, great writers, acclaimed poets and lesser-known personalities all meet at Governors Island, declared a national monument, to hold innumerable readings, recitals, discussions and lectures.
One of New York City's star sports which has two major teams, the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. Although there is great rivalry between them and both teams play in Major League Baseball, they belong to different divisions.
The origins of the sport are unclear, but it is generally thought that the foundations of the current game emerged in New York thanks to the first organised baseball club in 1842, the New York Knickerbockers Base Ball Club.
The baseball league runs from early April to October, during which time we can watch both teams play in their respective stadiums, the Yankee Stadium is located in the Bronx and Citi Field, home of the Mets is located in Queens. The playoffs are in October and the finals in early November. So, New York in July is a perfect time to watch a baseball game.

If you've never been to a live game, you'll feel the genuine American atmosphere: the solemnity of the anthem, the celebrations and the enthusiasm of the fans , the excitement of the game and of course plenty restaurants where you can get burgers, hot dogs and pizza. Baseball games don't have a stipulated playing time, some can last until after midnight, so as not to get too tired you can move around the stadium and follow the game from another angle or leave when you want. It is quite usual for spectators to leave without seeing the whole match.
The price of tickets varies depending on the location of the seats and how well you can see the game from them. The cheapest ones can be obtained from 10 dollars and there are several outlets, where we can compare prices, but the MLB website is the most reliable.
One of the more recent events of the New York summer. It has been held since 2016 and has been so well received that it has become one of the most established festivals. A great picnic, concerts and many DJs is what this festival offers, but with one peculiarity: everyone has to wear pink and/or white.
Since 2019 it has been held at Randall's Island Park and is held over a weekend. You can buy a weekend pass or a day ticket for Friday or Saturday and they are priced according to type. A regular ticket includes access to concerts and the food and drinks area and also includes a glass of rosé wine for a $100 day pass and a $285 weekend pass. VIP tickets offer the same as general admission but in addition you are also entitled to use the pool and prices range from $275 for a day to $500 for the whole weekend.
MoMA PS1 is one of the biggest institutions in the United States dedicated exclusively to contemporary art, located in the Long Island neighboruhood of Queens. It carries out several national and international projects throughout the year and during the summer the Warm Up Party festival is held. This takes place every Saturday in July and August from 3pm to 9pm in the rear patio of the MoMA PS1 where you can enjoy theatre performances, art exhibitions of various disciplines and the best of electronic music, rap and emerging art.
The Manhattanhenge, or Manhattan solstice, is a phenomenon that takes place twice a year between late May and mid-July when the sun, at sunset, aligns in an east-west direction with the streets of the urban layout completely illuminating all of them. This marvel can be seen two days running. On the first day we can see the whole of the sun suspended on the horizon and the next day only half of it and on both occasions the sunset is spectacular.
There are several places where you can get a good view of this phenomenon - 14th Street, 23rd Street or 34th Street. On 34th Street you will be able to contemplate the beauty of the sunset with the architectural beauty of the Empire State Building. As in any famous New York event, the streets are crowded with both local citizens and tourists, so if you are keen on getting it all on record taking photos, you will need to be there half an hour before sunset.
